Apartment rental rate hike expected in Puget Sound area

Apartment rents in the Puget Sound area are expected to shoot up 6 percent this year, with Seattle-area rent increases among the highest in the nation, according to a third quarter report from Marcus & Millichap.

"Bolstered by job gains and healthy long-term population and household growth projections, the Puget Sound's economic strength will continue to support local apartment fundamentals, despite the third-quarter collapse of Washington Mutual," the real estate investment services firm said in a release.

Green and affordable

The folks over at Capitol Hill Housing want to get out the message that environmentally friendly construction doesn't have to be expensive.

"What we're trying to show is that you can even do it with an affordable building," said Chris Cooper, the nonprofit's director of fund development. "It really is about thoughtfulness more than about money."
