Keith Vance will graduate from the University of Washington with a degree in journalism this summer. Before returning to college in 2005, Vance was a computer programmer for 10 years, more specifically he built Web applications using open source technology such as: PHP, Perl, Linux, MySQL, PostgreSQL and Apache.
In late 2007 Vance, using his technical skills and his passion for community journalism, launched Seattle On The Hill.
Vance was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. After high school and a year at the University of Wisconsin Stout, he worked for five years as a printing press operator before moving to Naples, Florida in 1996, but not before becoming a journeyman press operator with the printer's union in St. Paul -- the Local 29c.
But the cold weather of Minnesota was wearing thin and Vance moved to Naples, Florida in the Fall of 1996. It was in Naples that he fell into a career in computers. Like most 24-year-olds, Vance wasn't certain what he wanted to do with his professional life, and technology seemed like a smart career choice.
In 1999 he moved to Seattle and continued his career as a technologist until 2005 when he decided to return to college to pursue a degree in journalism.
Now 35 years old, Vance has succeeded in several careers and hopes that his wide array of professional and personal experience will help him make Seattle On The Hill a relevant source for important news on his Capitol Hill neighborhood.
